My plan for my paper

Korean elementary school students get their English textbook and CD-ROM title from their school. This CD-ROM consists of the images of textbook, letters, sounds, songs, and games. Students can turn the page like real textbook. Also teachers get textbook and CD-ROM title for teacher which is little bit different with their student’s.

While teachers use their CD-ROM very often, students do not use very much. So I want to analyze the contents of that CD-ROM title and research what is an effective way of consisting that material. To this,

1. I will think about my classroom and students’ situation about English learning, furthermore why that kind of CD-ROM title is helpful to my students.

2. I will gather some data about e-book and some standards about good factors of e-book

3. According to those standards, I would like to analyze the contents and formation of that CD-ROM title.

4. I will present pros and cons of that CD, and I would like to suggest a better way to making that kind of materials, if possible.

Best way for learning language

I am trying to use a book about movie’s script and explanation of it. Also I am using an internet site for learning English pop songs.
Using multimedia like movie clip and sound file for song is effective way to remember new vocabulary to me. I can connect a mood of movie or actor’s face and saying with new vocabularies. That reminds me the meaning of words. But the problem is the level of English. When I watch some movie clips, there are so many new words, idioms, and technical terms. I write the words even though I don’t know the spelling exactly and then I look it up in a dictionary. But it takes long time to compare with the number of new words what I learn. So, special books for learning English with movie and internet sites shorten the time for study.
For that reason, I always try to teach my students with various materials which contain visual and aural things.

p.s.) I can’t find a movie which is helpful and appropriate level for academic English yet! ^^

Week 2nd-An Approach to Academic Writing

This book will be very helpful to write an academic paper for me. This chapter is very well constructed and summarized about point. To be honest, however, it is a new burden to me. I agree with those facts-thinking about audience, setting up a purpose, using a right strategy and organizing it effectively. But the style-the vocabulary shift and formal grammar-seems like third language to me. A certain thing is that I need more study and practice. Is there any recommendation about books or good way for learning of academic vocabulary and grammar?

Week2 CIP - Tears of my student

• WHAT?
Classroom was noisy with students’ shouting and laughing. Students were playing a game with their partner. Teacher looked around the classroom and confirmed the rule by each pair. One boy was crying during their pair work. His partner was trying to read teacher’s face. Teacher asked to them what happened.

• WHY?
He was not good at speaking English and had no confidence to say in English. When the class does some games, he always loses the games. So he used to get teased about that. That day, his partner hurt the boy’s pride.

• Meaning?
Actually he was a naughty boy in English class. He does not care other friends’ saying or his poor score. I never thought it is possible to make him crying by several words. I saw his eyes and tear. To that boy, that class must be hard to forget. At least, English is not his favorite subject anymore. He stepped back from English.

• Implications?
As an English teacher in elementary school, giving some motivation or making good impression about new language is very important as much as teaching new vocabularies. Some students have interest about study earlier than others or later than others. The important thing is students have confidence and positive mind about study whenever they want to start learning. That kind of attitude and mind is made when they are young. I should consider about not only my students’ score but also their emotions and feelings in my class.

Reading response

Reflection Is at the Heart of Practice

I prefer the Guided Reflection Protocol to the Critical Incidents Protocol. Because, in my case, it takes long time to write an essay or a report and I’m not good at discussion. However, I have interest about both of them by reason of that there is a limit as to what I can write and revise by myself. Furthermore, I think sharing ideas and experiences is very useful to improve writing skills.
As an elementary school teacher, I have not many chances to teach writing of English. I just teach write alphabets, words or simple sentences. But I think it will be helpful to use some questions - “What happened?”, “Why” and “What might it mean?” - in speaking class for students’ strategy about thinking.
